Drivers of disease transmission and emergence
Understanding what drives the occurrence of epidemics is of utmost important if we want to begin understanding how to control epidemics. I am interested in investigating how putative drivers of disease transmission lead to (extreme) inter-annual variation in transmission. Although most of the research I've conducted in this realm has been for vector-borne diseases, I am very excited to explore how adaptive immunity, age, and other factors drive which influenza strain is circulating when!

Forecasting emerging infectious diseases
Real-time disease forecasting offer insight regarding the duration, timing, magnitude, and possible control strategies of an epidemic. I am interested in fitting models to (multiple) data types, generating forecasts, and updating models as new data becomes available. Recently, I contributed to several COVID-19 forecasting efforts.

Revealing unobserved transmission dynamics
Pathogen dynamics often fly under the radar of detection. Models give us the opportunity to reconcile those unobserved dynamics and variation with data. I am interested in formulating hypotheses regarding those unobserved dynamics and testing those hypotheses with models.
